The Age Tape Machine: Three Songs a Month, Sixteen Tapes, No Album Campaign

Since February 2022, Arden Jones has released a three-song EP called an “age tape” on a monthly clock: sixteen numbered installments by late 2025, plus a compilation LP and an all-acoustic edition. That cadence, not any traditional album campaign, is what carried the Marin County alt-pop artist past 273 million Spotify streams, and he is on record saying the schedule itself is the strategy.

What exactly is the age tape series?

The format is almost comically simple: three songs, every month, numbered in order. age tape 1 arrived February 3, 2022, and tapes 1 through 9 landed that year like a subscription service. In November 2022 he compiled the year's best into age tape 0, a full-length that sources still cannot agree on calling his debut album. The series resumed with tapes 10 through 14 across 2024, detoured into the acoustic tape (November 7, 2024), which stripped down catalog favorites like “roll the dice” and “horror story,” then reached age tape 15 on September 18, 2025 and age tape 16 by that November.

The name predates the series. “Age” was Jones's original SoundCloud moniker, taken from his nickname A.J., and his senior capstone at Novato High's Marin School of the Arts went out under it as a 10-song project. When the monthly commitment began, the old name became the series title.

Why does he believe cadence beats campaigns?

Jones has stated the thesis in plain terms, most recently in a January 2026 video Q&A.

The logic tracks with how he was built. BMI spotlighted him in June 2021 as a writer chasing the career of a “hook machine,” and a hook machine needs throughput: a monthly tape means twelve chances a year for a song to find its audience, instead of two or three heavily marketed swings. It also means the audience watches the artist develop in public, month over month, rather than meeting a finished product every eighteen months.

The campaign is the calendar.

The tapes, not standalone singles pushes, produced most of his biggest songs. “horror story” (41.2 million streams) and “daisy” (22.6 million) both live on age tape 1. “starstruck” (19.6 million) is an age tape 8 cut. His career leader, “mr. sunshine” (43.6 million), arrived in the middle of the 2022 tape year. Monthly listeners climbed in step with the machine: roughly 450,000 in March 2021, 1.4 million by September 2022, consistently over a million through 2023-24, and about 4.8 million by mid-2026 per Kworb.

Depth shows up in the fandom too. Threads on r/ardenjones argue over deep cuts like “Gold Plated” and “Bay front,” the kind of catalog-first fan culture that only exists when there is a catalog worth digging through. Sixteen tapes deep, there is.

The discipline underneath

None of this works without an unusual work ethic, and Jones talks about it like a tradesman. His advice on sustaining output: “Do it everyday and do the parts of it that make you happy.” His advice to his younger self, from the same January 2026 Q&A: “finish every song that you had faith in at one point... taking things to the end is very important... you don't want to end up with a thousand ideas and no product, no music.” A monthly deadline is exactly that principle turned into infrastructure: the tape ships whether or not perfectionism has finished arguing with itself.

Where the strategy fits the scene

The Ring has documented this conviction before, in different dialects. Christian Gates' song-a-day years ran on the same engine: from 2020 to 2023 he wrote daily, posted daily and kept at least a million views on every video. Dutch Melrose's sped-up and slowed-down release strategy treats the schedule and the format of a release as instruments in their own right. Jones's version is the subscription model: not more songs per day, but a promise the audience can set a watch by. Three artists, three systems, one shared belief: consistent output compounds, and marketing budgets do not.

What comes after tape 16?

Apparently, the thing the tapes replaced. In that January 2026 Q&A, Jones referenced a proper debut album taking shape, which would be his first release ever billed that way, since sources never fully settled whether age tape 0 counts. Meanwhile the machine keeps printing: December 2025's “someone new” spiked past 123,000 daily Spotify streams per Kworb, and summer 2026 has him as direct support on Passion Pit's Pretty Penny Tour across North America. Whatever the album turns out to be, it will arrive with four years of monthly receipts behind it.
