The scene she came up in
Before the arenas, there was the DIY LA circuit, the writing rooms and back-of-the-room shows where a generation of alt-pop artists, Christian Gates among the singer-songwriters in that orbit, sharpened their material in front of a few dozen people at a time. That world is where Devon's instincts were formed, and it is a long way from a 65-date arena tour.

The literal cubby
The phrase is not a metaphor. When Devon moved to Los Angeles in 2019 and dropped out of Musicians Institute after one semester, the survival years were real. She first lived in an artist community off Melrose, sleeping in what The FADER described as a cubby sized for a human body, then in a garage attached to a house, also off Melrose, where the career finally started working. A polka-beat TikTok went viral in 2020 and brought her first industry meetings, which she navigated completely cold, getting on the phone and asking what an A&R even was. The distance from that cubby to a 65-date arena tour is the whole point of the story.
The test of scale
Opening an arena is the hardest job in live music, playing to thousands who came for someone else. It is also the fastest way to grow. Across 65 nights, Devon Again gets to make the case for herself to Rodrigo's audience, arena by arena, and everything about her rise suggests she is ready for the size of it.
