Fontaines D.C.'s Dopamine Chamber Lands With Four Times Romance's Rough Trade Pre-Orders

Fontaines D.C. released their fifth album, Dopamine Chamber, on October 16, 2026, through XL Recordings, and Rough Trade says first-week pre-orders in its shops ran about four times those of 2024's Romance, already the best-selling record in the chain's history. Music Week's release-day headline calls them the retailer's biggest band.

The album was produced by James Ford, who also made Romance, and it arrives with the band at a new size: lead single Marianne became their first UK Top 20 hit in summer 2026, Music Week reports they have topped 10 million monthly Spotify listeners, and their European arena tour starts in Lisbon in late October. But Music Week chose to tell release day through a record shop, and that is the right lens for this band.

What does "biggest band" at Rough Trade actually mean?

Music Week's piece, an interview with Rough Trade managing director Lawrence Montgomery, does not publish a sales total for the chain. The claim rests on four figures he gave:

4x

The third number is the unusual one. Most records do their business in week one. “As a retailer, we loved that Romance continued to sell beyond week one which is rare these days,” Montgomery told Music Week. The wider picture fits: Music Week puts Romance at 345,759 UK sales to date (Official Charts Company), the band's biggest record, and it peaked at No.2 and went platinum in the UK.

XL is pushing the physical side hard too. Music Week reports the label organised 374 Dopamine Chamber listening parties in record stores across 38 countries.

How did a record shop get a seat in the story?

It started with a box of 7-inch singles. In a 2022 Rough Trade feature, the shop wrote that its Talbot Road store in West London was the first place in the UK to stock Liberty Belle, the band's 2018 single. Tom, one of the two band members the shop interviewed, remembered how it happened.

The first London show that we ever did, our manager Trev brought us here with a little box of Liberty Belle singles and it was our first time in London ever, very bright lights in the city type thing, so it always feels very special coming back.Tom of Fontaines D.C., Rough Trade blog, November 2022

That manager was Trevor Dietz, who died on June 7, 2026. The band called him “the sixth member of the band” in their tribute, reported by Music Week. Montgomery tells the same origin story from the counter's side: Rough Trade stocked their early singles “before they signed to Partisan,” they played outside Rough Trade West for Record Store Day in 2019, and the shop has “hosted countless in-stores and out-stores with them on previous albums.”

Seven years from a rain-soaked Record Store Day set to the best-selling record in the shop's history.

The label path matters here. The band left Partisan for XL with Romance, announced in April 2024, and stayed independent while getting bigger. “It's so important for us that these landmark, large albums break through indie labels, via indie stores,” Montgomery said. It is the same thing our piece on showing up versus streaming argued: the fans who buy the object and stand in the room are the ones who carry a band through a long career, and that bet looks less fragile than the superfan bubble talk suggests.

What did the band say at the Roundhouse?

The night before release, Fontaines played an intimate show at London's 3,300-capacity Roundhouse, with net proceeds going to the suicide prevention charity CALM. NME reports that near the end, frontman Grian Chatten told the crowd: “It's been a very tough year for us. I'd like to sing you this song,” before playing Romance single Favourite. NME read it as a reference to Dietz.

What comes next for Dopamine Chamber?

The European arena tour opens in Lisbon in late October, ahead of sold-out UK dates in November that include The O2 in London, the same kind of jump to arenas we tracked with beabadoobee. NME reports a Fontaines special of Later... With Jools Holland, filmed at Alexandra Palace, airs in November. The first-week UK chart verdict is still to come, but in Rough Trade's shops the early count is already in.
