Warner Chappell Will Administer My Chemical Romance's Songs as The Black Parade Turns 20

Warner Chappell Music has signed My Chemical Romance to an exclusive worldwide administration agreement covering the band's entire song catalog and future works, announced October 15, 2026. A day later the band shared “Someone Out There Loves You,” a previously unreleased live song from the 20th anniversary reissue of The Black Parade, due October 23.

The timing is the point. The publisher signed a band in the loudest week its catalog has had in years: a stadium tour built around a 20-year-old album, Hollywood Bowl shows from October 21 (per NME), and a deluxe reissue landing two days later.

What did Warner Chappell actually sign?

According to Music Business Worldwide and Music Week, Warner Chappell will oversee global rights administration, copyright protection, and sync licensing across film, television and video games. Music Week's report adds that the publisher will pursue “innovative creative opportunities to expand the reach of their iconic songbook.” The deal names four studio albums: I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, The Black Parade and Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.

What was not reported matters as much. Neither outlet printed a fee, a term, or whether any copyright changed hands. Both call it an administration agreement. MBW's coverage notes that Warner Chappell acquired David Bowie's song catalog for a reported $250 million in 2022. That was a purchase. This, as described, is administration, and who owns the compositions after it has not been reported, so we will not guess.

Administration is the unglamorous part of publishing: registering songs, collecting what they earn around the world, chasing uses nobody licensed. When nobody does that job, money sits unclaimed, which is the problem the MLC's market-share rule for unclaimed royalties exposes. Copyright protection is not abstract at Warner either, as its suit against Ray-Ban owner Luxottica over songs in brand posts shows.

Greg Sowders, Warner Chappell's SVP of A&R, said in the announcement that bringing the band's publishing to Warner Music Group, alongside its recorded music and merch, “feels like the ultimate homecoming.” That is the business logic. The band's relationship with Warner Records began in 2003, and its global merchandise deal already runs through WMG. With publishing added, the recordings, the merch and the songs now sit with one company.

Why sign a 20-year-old catalog now?

29.7%
Share of streams · on Spotify's US Top 200 weekly charts from songs at least 10 years old, first nine months of 2026, per MBW analysis

MBW puts that share at around three times its 2024 level, the same catalog surge showing up on global charts. My Chemical Romance is a live example. Around its three sold-out nights at Wembley Stadium in July, Danger Days reached No. 1 and Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge No. 2 on the UK's Official Rock and Metal Albums chart, with The Black Parade in the Top 10, MBW reports.

An anniversary reissue is exactly where an administrator earns its fee. Every newly released recording of an old composition is fresh publishing income to register and collect, and a band back in the headlines is a band music supervisors are thinking about. The rights got a new manager just before the catalog's biggest week.

What is “Someone Out There Loves You”?

NME reported on October 16 that the song “has never been officially released up until now,” and that the recording comes from the band's October 2007 show at Maxwell's, a 200-capacity venue in Hoboken. It follows “The Sharpest Lives (Live from Hoboken),” released to streaming on September 10 when the reissue was announced.

The reissue, out via Reprise, pairs the original 14-song album with six bonus tracks. The tracklist published by the Official Charts Company:

NME adds that the One Step vinyl is limited to 7,000 copies, cut from the original analogue master recordings. The band framed the set simply: “For the first time, we have included everything we finished during those sessions in a single collection.”

The songs got a new administrator the week the catalog is loudest. What the band kept was not part of the announcement.

Next: the Hollywood Bowl run opens October 21, and the reissue arrives October 23. The publisher's pitch will be tested by what follows, in the sync placements and new uses that land after the anniversary noise fades.
