The Well in Spoleto: Pop’s Most Wholesome Viral Origin

Tiffany Day’s career started with one candid clip: on March 27, 2017, video of the 17-year-old Kansas choir student singing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” into a stone well in Spoleto, Italy went viral on Twitter, collecting more than 312,000 likes and days of national news coverage. There was no rollout, no hashtag strategy, no label. A school trip found a good echo, and the echo found the internet.

Nearly a decade later, with her hyperpop reinvention Halo having reached No. 25 on Billboard’s Top Dance Albums chart, the well remains the cleanest possible answer to the question every artist bio tries to complicate: where did Tiffany Day come from? A hole in the ground in Umbria, and a voice that carried.

What actually happened in Spoleto?

Day was in Italy on a trip with the Madrigals, the choir at Wichita Collegiate School. She was already a bedroom internet kid by then: her first YouTube upload, a cover of The Script’s “Breakeven,” went up in 2015, she had edited anime videos on Vine before that, and she made her first song in GarageBand at age 10, inspired by Hannah Montana. In Spoleto she leaned over a well, sang a few bars of “Hallelujah” into it, and posted the clip with a caption that undersold the moment as thoroughly as any caption ever has: “found a well in italy with a nice echo.”

The echo did the rest. Within days the clip was running on ABC7 Chicago, Mashable, Global News in Canada and Bored Panda, and it crossed the Atlantic into Spain’s El País. Television came calling too.

She followed the moment with a full YouTube cover of “Hallelujah,” and back in Wichita the student who had felt “small and quiet” and “constantly judged” as one of few Asian students at a predominantly white school was crowned homecoming queen her senior year. The internet handed her a different mirror than the hallways had.

The career it rerouted

The detail that lifts the well story above cute-anecdote status: Day was planning an entirely different life. Before the clip took off she had been considering biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan. The viral moment convinced her to pursue music professionally instead, and she struck a deal with her parents: she could chase it, but she would also enroll in college. At 18 she moved to Los Angeles and entered Loyola Marymount University to study communications and public relations.

That compromise became the architecture of her early catalog. While at LMU she released a run of singles, passed one million YouTube subscribers by late 2020, self-produced her Overdramatic EP, and then mapped one EP to each year of college: The Recovery Project for freshman homesickness, The Dependency Project for sophomore codependency, The Renewal Project for junior year, and The Gratitude Project, released February 18, 2023, to close out her senior spring. A degree, rendered as a confessional discography.

The science-track-that-almost-was is a recurring story in this scene: Julia Alexa kept the lab and the catalog both. Day chose the well, and never quite looked back.

Why does the origin still matter?

Nobody planned it, which is exactly why it worked.

Virality in 2026 is an industrial process: sped-up edits, sound campaigns, posting calendars. Day’s founding clip predates all of that machinery. It was an accident of acoustics, filmed on a school trip, captioned like a diary entry. And the career built on top of it has been unusually deliberate ever since, almost as if she spent a decade earning a moment she got for free: self-produced EPs, a self-funded and self-managed tour, a fully independent debut album in 2024’s Lover Tofu Fruit, and a 2025 reinvention she executed herself, one TikTok at a time, before signing to Broke Records on her own terms.

The wholesome origin bought her an audience. The ten years of work decided what to do with it. Both halves are worth knowing, and the second half is still being written: Halo is the top-streamed project of her career at nearly 50 million streams, and the girl from the well is now a critics’ subject at Pitchfork, NPR and the LA Times. Not bad for a nice echo.
