TikTok's New Fan Hubs: What Happens When the Whole Fandom Has to Unlock the Content

On TikTok, fans now have to work together to unlock the extras. On October 1, the platform detailed two global in-app campaigns, one for Taylor Swift's "Patient Zero" and one for Mrs. GREEN APPLE's album POPS, where individual tasks earn profile frames and collective goals reveal exclusive content.

How the hubs work

For Swift, fans who search "Taylor Swift" or "Patient Zero" land on a Search Hub, Music Business Worldwide reports. Individual fans unlock a profile frame by following @taylorswift and @taylornation, saving the song to a music app, posting a video with it and listening to full tracks on TikTok. Behind-the-scenes clips from the video sit behind a collective goal. "Some moments will take the whole fandom," TikTok said.

The POPS campaign uses the same parts: an album hub with the tracklist, tasks that unlock a profile frame and a worldwide community challenge. MBW reports Mrs. GREEN APPLE is the first Japanese act chosen for one of these artist campaigns. Earlier this year TikTok ran similar experiences for Olivia Rodrigo, Madonna and Tyla.

Why the tasks matter

Look at the task list closely and it is a promotion plan: follow the artist, save the song to a streaming app, post a video with the sound. Every fan who unlocks a frame has also pushed the song out to their own followers and into a streaming library. TikTok says Swift now has over 33.4 million followers and 278.6 million likes on the platform.

What about rising artists?

So far these hubs have gone to global stars. There is no announced path for smaller acts to get one. But the logic behind them is familiar to anyone in this scene. Christian Gates built his career on TikTok, and so did many of the dark-pop artists The Ring covers, where fans using a sound is what turned songs into moments. The hubs formalize what those fandoms already do by instinct: share, save, and make the song their own.

If TikTok ever opens these tools further down the ladder, close-knit fandoms may be the ones best placed to use them.
