Amsterdam Dance Event opened its 30th edition on October 21, 2026, and the numbers show how far it has come from a 1996 trade gathering. Through October 25, ADE says its program includes more than 3,600 artists at over 1,300 events in more than 300 venues across the city, with Jean-Michel Jarre as guest of honour and the newly renovated Gashouder back in use.
From 300 delegates to a citywide takeover
ADE began in 1996 with 300 professional delegates and three nighttime venues, according to the organization. Its 2025 edition drew a record 600,000 visitors and 11,000 music professionals, Pollstar reported, and organizers expect at least as many for the anniversary. Visitors now come from more than 150 countries. Shows run from clubs and warehouses to Johan Cruijff Arena, plus churches, museums, boats and trams, and Pollstar said the aquarium at Amsterdam's Artis zoo and Amsterdam City Hall join the list of venues in 2026.
Managing director Jan-Willem van de Ven, who started at ADE as an intern in 2009 and became sole managing director in 2024, told Pollstar that the festival still works the way it did under longtime director Richard Zijlma: “we're not the ones programming the festival, we give our stage to programmers, artists, creatives, and let them curate the program. ADE is built together.”
The anniversary highlights
The Gashouder, closed for renovations since early 2025, reopens on October 21 with two performances of “Swan Lake Remixed for ADE” by the Dutch National Ballet and ISH Dance Collective, followed by a set pairing Armin van Buuren with hard house producer Benwal, Pollstar reported. At the Centrale Markthal, artist Boris Acket's kinetic light and fabric installation EINDER hosts performances by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Elias Mazian. Jarre marks the 50th anniversary of Oxygene at AFAS Live and gives a keynote interview at the ADE Pro conference.
ADE groups thirty events into a 30 YEARS ADE Icon Series. The names on the wider bill include David Guetta, Eric Prydz, Paul Kalkbrenner, Martin Garrix, Carl Craig, Armand Van Helden and Boys Noize.
AI on the conference agenda
By day, ADE Pro runs sessions with Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube Music, NVIDIA, Believe, Warner Music, Sony Music and Universal, among others. Van Buuren joins Jarre, Lady Starlight and JakoJako for a talk called Music & Machines, and ADE and VibeLab are presenting a Nighttime Culture Index that maps nightlife across global cities. Van de Ven told Pollstar that ADE is “the platform for the industry to discuss whether AI is our friend or enemy,” adding that “the more digital the world becomes, the more valuable it is to come together as human beings and meet in person.”
Still small behind the scenes
For all its size, ADE is run as an independent, non-profit cultural foundation with Dutch rights group Buma Stemra as a founding partner. Van de Ven said the core team is six to seven full-time staff and around 80 freelancers for about half the year. His tip for first-timers: “pinpoint one thing you really want to see every day across the five days, and go with the flow the rest of the time.”
