Dutch Melrose

Singer · Songwriter · Producer  ·  Los Angeles · All coverage · Connections map

Dutch Melrose (born Josh Harms, full songwriter credit Joshua Zachary Harms) is an American dark-R&B and alternative pop artist, songwriter and producer from the greater Los Angeles area, and one of independent music’s most complete self-owned operations. His catalog has passed 750 million streams across platforms, moving at roughly a million streams a day with about 3.6 million monthly Spotify listeners, led by “RUNRUNRUN” at 226 million+. He is his own manager, his own marketer, the founder and CEO of his own label (MADKID Records), the director, editor and colorist of his own videos, and the owner of his own catalog and publishing. In his words to his alma mater, London’s ICMP: “Everything I’ve done has been fully independent, from funding releases and marketing to running paid media campaigns at scale and managing my own catalogue ownership and publishing.”

Early life & ICMP

Harms was raised in the greater Los Angeles area, attending La Cañada High School in the suburbs northeast of the city, and is now based in Burbank, with his label’s studio operations in Studio City. Contrary to the transplant arc most “LA artist” bios imply, he is the rarer thing: actually from here. The unexpected chapter is the middle one: he crossed the Atlantic to study songwriting at ICMP, the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London, earning a Bachelor’s in Music. ICMP’s relationship with him spans his whole career, a Spotlight Artist feature on his single “Home” back in 2019, its official Student Successes profile today, and, in 2026, a full-circle guest session in which the school brought him back to teach current students “how he has built an audience,” covered by The Ring at the ICMP story. The school also gave him one of his most enduring creative partnerships: songwriter Alex Nobile, a fellow ICMP alum and co-writer on “Honey” and “FORGET YOU.”

His working life in music long predates the public catalog: his professional timeline lists the Dutch Melrose project from January 2010, and a 2019 industry profile already described a full-time singer-songwriter, producer and engineer with over 50 million career streams from combined client work. The stage name’s etymology has never been explained on record, though “Melrose” reads naturally as a nod to the iconic LA avenue.

Come-up

The public discography opens with “Because It Mattered” (2018) and the debut album After Hours (February 14, 2019, seven songs, self-released), followed by a stack of 2019 singles: “Crazy,” which earned a Lyrical Lemonade write-up praising production that spanned “hip-hop, alternative rock, pop, and electronic”; “Home,” the ICMP spotlight track; “1983”; and the “Ride 4 U” remixes. A second album, Love & Illusions, landed in 2020 alongside “Sleepless,” still one of his most-streamed catalog songs at 41.9 million. The 2021 curiosity is “Souvenir” with Whales on Monstercat, to this day his only release on a major third-party EDM label, and the same year’s Slowed + Reverb, Pt. 1 quietly planted the flag for a release strategy that would later define him.

RUNRUNRUN & BookTok

“RUNRUNRUN” (March 25, 2022, co-produced with Collin Idzikowski) is the career-defining record, and its path to 226 million streams is one of the great case studies in fan-driven virality. In 2023-24, TikTok’s BookTok community adopted the song, that desperate “run baby run” chase energy, as the unofficial anthem of Zade Meadows, the obsessive antagonist of H.D. Carlton’s dark-romance novel Haunting Adeline. The trend crossed languages (Indonesian outlet Hops.ID documented fans asking “is anyone thinking of Zade?” in his comments as early as August 2023) and jumped fandoms entirely, becoming a staple soundtrack for fan edits of Jinx from Arcane.

The decisive move was his: he leaned in, playing into the association on his own TikTok. Reddit commenters called the play in real time: “he has actually done it himself on TikTok,” wrote one; “he plays into it, which makes it blow up even more. It’s a publicity thing,” added another. Genius’s crowd annotation reads the song as a narrator “chasing a girl... he’ll do whatever it takes to make her love him”, exactly the projection dark-romance readers heard. He eventually told the origin himself in a TikTok captioned “THIS IS HOW MY SONG ‘RUNRUNRUN’ WAS BORN.” The sped-up version alone has pulled nearly 16 million further streams. Full analysis at the BookTok feature and RUNRUNRUN and the MADKID sound.

MADKID Records

MADKID Records is his label in the fullest sense: founded and led by Harms as CEO, run from Studio City with Benjamin Shubert as Creative Director, distributing through DistroKid while the catalog and publishing stay in-house. It is a working roster, not a vanity imprint: Dutch Melrose, benny mayne, Ashley Sienna, Natalia Marion, HARRY WAS HERE, PRETTY HAVØC and Rad Cat, several of whom double as his closest collaborators, and the label actively recruits digital-marketing interns. ICMP’s framing is the cleanest: an indie label built “alongside his own catalog,” with an explicit emphasis on self-run paid media at scale. The Ring’s label profile lives at MADKID Records: The Label Behind Dutch Melrose.

Collaborators

For an artist with such a defined solo identity, the collaboration map is wide. benny mayne is the inner circle: “RUSH” (22.9M streams), “Pretty Please” (87.6M), “Match Made In Hell,” “KARMA,” and the co-headline slot on the 2026 tour. PLVTINUM and Chris Grey brought the biggest outside look: “Jennifer’s Body” (October 2023, Rebellion Records, 22 million+ streams), the collaboration that press credits with launching Chris Grey to a broader audience and that led to a joint tour. Christian Gates is the “TOXIC” partner (see below). Deeper cuts: Rad Cat, the San Diego producer who collaborated on “alright” back in 2019 and is now a MADKID labelmate; Whales on the Monstercat single; Paris Petitjean on “Mockingbird”; PRETTY HAVØC co-producing “FORGET YOU” and co-billing “MIRROR MIRROR”; and writers Alex Nobile and Collin Idzikowski behind the biggest records. Visual identity & self-direction

Roll the credits on a recent Dutch Melrose video and the same name appears three times. “ANGEL”: direct/edit/color, Dutch Melrose; film, Ed Ko; AD, Jenna Hogan. “DIRTY LITTLE FIEND”: direct/edit/color, Dutch Melrose; film, Dutch Melrose & Zed Friedman. He is his own director, editor and colorist, small crews, no marquee outsiders, total authorship, examined at the self-direction feature and The Cinematic World of Dutch Melrose.

The world those videos build is coherent to the pixel: dark romance. Promoter copy sells “cinematic production and dark melodic songwriting”; ICMP describes a sound moving “from moody alternative pop to R&B styles ready for a mainstream audience but still with an experimental edge.” His Instagram speaks the dialect natively, “PRETTY PLEASE COME ON OVER & RUIN MY LIFE,” “for the freaks & vamps, spooky season has arrived”, and his Facebook fans self-identify as “all dark romance girlie’s!” The song titles are the thesis in miniature: PRETTY PLEASE, KARMA, DIRTY LITTLE FIEND, Match Made In Hell, Jennifer’s Body, danger-as-desire, obsession, femme-fatale mythology, the exact emotional lane BookTok later formalized around him.

The catalog strategy

Nearly every modern Dutch Melrose single ships three ways: original, sped up, and slowed + reverb. It looks like a gimmick and is actually infrastructure: TikTok trends run on tempo-shifted edits, and unofficial versions monetize nothing. By releasing official variants, every edit-driven wave streams back to MADKID, the sped-up RUNRUNRUN’s ~16 million streams being the standing proof. He was early: the dedicated Slowed + Reverb, Pt. 1 release dates to October 2021, before the format became an industry reflex. Analysis at Sped Up, Slowed Down.

The business model

The management structure is the famous part: he is his own manager, hiring day-to-day help as an employee rather than answering to a traditional manager, a new-wave inversion of the industry’s oldest power relationship, covered at the self-management feature. He runs his own marketing and, by reputation, pulls some of the best cost-per-view numbers in the industry; that engine plus RUNRUNRUN’s momentum drove the jump from roughly 1 million to 3.5 million monthly Spotify listeners in about a year, documented at the growth story. The other revenue lanes complete the picture: the SoundBetter for-hire profile (songwriter/producer/engineer, top 40, pop, electronic and R&B, working from a home rig built around a Manley Cardioid into an Apogee Duet), the dutchmelrose.com merch store, which also resells The Ring, and full publishing/catalog ownership. After the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires he reportedly dedicated all merch tips and a portion of ticket and merch proceeds to local relief organizations.

The Christian Gates partnership

The alliance with Christian Gates runs through every layer of both careers. The song: “TOXIC,” for which Dutch wrote the second verse that finally completed a chorus Gates had carried for three years (the full saga); Gates discussed the collaboration’s “synergy” at length in his Front Row Live album interview. The stages: the January 2025 Teragram Ballroom co-headline and the 2025 Voila tour across Europe, where The Ring hardware outsold the clothing at the merch table. The businesses: Swarm by Lux was built with Dutch advising, his self-run marketing operation serving as the model, and his 2026 Heartbreak Hotel Tour runs its VIP through The Ring VIP. Two independent owner-operators, one shared infrastructure: profiled at the partnership feature.

Live history

ICMP’s profile credits “numerous US and European tours.” The documented arc: the joint tour that followed “Jennifer’s Body” with PLVTINUM and Chris Grey; the Teragram Ballroom co-headline with Christian Gates (January 2025); the Voila tour across Europe (2025); and the 2026 Heartbreak Hotel Tour with benny mayne supporting: Phoenix’s Rebel Lounge (Aug 4), Salt Lake City’s Soundwell (Aug 6), Denver’s Meow Wolf (Aug 8), Dallas (Aug 11), Chicago’s Subterranean (Aug 14), Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right (Aug 18), San Francisco’s Brick & Mortar (Sep 17) and West Hollywood’s Peppermint Club (Sep 24), VIP through The Ring VIP, in the 400-600 cap rooms where the experience means proximity. Full record at the tour history.

Craft & philosophy

His writing doctrine, stated in his producer-for-hire days and visible in every hook since: “At the end of the day the song and melody is the most important thing... if a melody is stuck in your head and you got someone singing those lyrics in the shower... you got them 100%.” And on process: “I focus a lot of my attention on detail. I like to get the ‘feel’ and melodies down to a point where the song really grabs you sonically and then add in the lyrics/concepts as the song develops.” The lyrical world stays in character, obsession, heartbreak, loneliness (“Sleepless,” “1-800-LONELY-AF,” “FORGET YOU”), femme-fatale danger, delivered as stylized narrative rather than diary; he keeps the private life private. What he shows instead is the machine: origin-story clips, relationship-advice micro-content that doubles as lyrical marketing, and the fan-trend embrace that turned a book character into a marketing department.

Audience & reception

His audience skews toward TikTok-native listeners and fandom communities rather than critic forums, and the data shows it: Reddit’s Dutch Melrose footprint concentrates in r/Music (the famous thread debating whether fans over-associate RUNRUNRUN with Zade Meadows), r/teenagers favorite-song polls, r/ifyoulikeblank recommendation threads that group him with Artemas and Ari Abdul as “toxic, obsessed alt-pop,” and even r/arcane, where RUNRUNRUN scores Jinx fan edits. His own TikTok output has four signature modes: song-origin clips (“The Birth of RunRunRun”), relationship-advice micro-content that doubles as lyrical marketing, tour-life clips, and direct engagement with the fan-fiction layer around his songs. ICMP’s reported totals put his combined social views past 2.5 billion. The long-form-interview scarcity is notable and deliberate-looking: for an artist of his scale there is no podcast circuit, no talk-show run, just the work, the school that claims him, and the internet doing the talking.
